Hybrid Hollowform

My apologies for not getting this up sooner. Over the past few weeks me and Sherine have been collaborating on our hollowform project. We started by compiling ideas, and deciding which ones we thought spoke to both of our research. we settled on combining the idea of a vase, with my idea of something going from low poly to high poly. This was supposed to come together in the form of three mouths emerging from the vase, going from sort of flat, to almost lifelike. Problems arose when we did our first test print.

The first print wasn't a success, for an unexpected reason. In my frenzy of rhino and meshmixer, I hadn't stopped to think about the actual physical world. Bryan pointed out to me that the majority of resolution that you can get out of a 3D printer is all in the Z axis, and that you can't really push for great definition in X and Y because they are much less precise. Along with that discovery it was pointed out to us that the object we made wasn't really hollow. This gave us some things to think about and eventually we came to the conclusion that we wanted a different design. keeping with the idea of a vase, we decided to incorporate the transition from hard edges into smoothness into the vessel itself. After just a short while we had our redesign completed and ran our print.

A success! We finally got where we were trying to go. Not only did the vase convey the principle I had hoped for, it also looked awesome. The smooth edges on the one side printed great and so did the harsh edges on the interior. Some interesting things happened however, one of which being these strange string structures on the inside. It was later revealed that these structures were caused by an extra third perimeter that was only printing in certain places, and then carrying the excess across the object.
All in all I think this collaborative project was a good success and learning experience. It is obviously challenging to work as a team and meet everyones expectations, but all in all I think me and Sherine made it happen.
